Sterling weeks when surveys and small-account flow disagree

Bank of England weeks often split fund manager surveys from the sterling crosses favoured by private traders.

Into a Bank of England decision, published fund manager surveys can look cautious on sterling while private-client flow in major pairs remains assertive. That split is one of the cleaner illustrations of institutional versus retail sentiment we see each year.

Our event-week notes usually ask three questions. First, is the institutional caution about rates, growth, or both? Second, is retail activity concentrated in a single liquid cross or spread across several? Third, has options skew favoured by smaller accounts already paid up for a known outcome?

Clients rarely need a prediction of the vote. They need language for what a quiet buy-side and a loud retail tape mean for the day after the statement.
